We can sustain profitability after Thai expansion: Buzzme CEO

By Goh Thean Eu | Sep 26, 2016
  • Expanded to Thailand recently, eyes Indonesia, Philippines, Myanmar next
Shares lessons learnt during Buzzme's early years
Buzzme CEO Loke Yee Siong (fifth from right) with his team during the company's third anniversary celebration

Enabling Asia Tech Sdn Bhd, a mobile virtual network aggregator (MVNA), expects to remain profitable operationally after its subsidiary’s recent expansion to the Thailand market.
Buzzme, a wholly-owned unit of Enabling Asia Tech, is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). It launched its mobile services in 2013, and recently expanded to Thailand. It entered the market by acquiring existing MVNO IEC-3G for an undisclosed amount.
In less than three years since it launched its services, the company is already profitable operationally.
“We are already Ebitda (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization) positive. We expect it to be sustainable even with our expansion to Thailand,” said Loke Yee Siong, chief executive officer of Enabling Asia Tech.

A MVNO is a mobile service provider that does not own the wireless network infrastructure. It is able to offer voice and data services to customers by riding on existing mobile operator’s infrastructure.
At the same time, a MVNA is a company that provides network infrastructure and related services (such as network subsystems, business support systems, provisioning, administration and operations support systems) to MVNOs.
For Enabling Asia Tech and Buzzme, they are offering their services by ultimately riding on U Mobile’s network.
Lessons learnt
For Loke, one of the key things he learnt during his journey with Enabling Asia Tech and Buzzme is that one needs to be agile and make changes fast.
He also added that one of his biggest mistakes during the early days was to compete head on with the incumbents.
“The minute you (MVNO) think like them, you will start to lose. I think a lot of MVNOs also make the same mistake. The minute you play like the big boys, spend like them and all, you will lose,” said Loke.
Realising that competing against the incumbents is not a viable plan, the company changed its approach and strategy.
It then changed its focus on the younger market – those Gen X and Gen Y’s, but more importantly, its go-to-market strategy is more digital-centric.
“We leveraged a lot on digital marketing, social media, and so forth,” said Loke.
Currently, Enabling Tech Asia is also serving several MVNOs under its network, including Prabha Mobile, ECI, itel, MyAngkasa Mobile and TRI Mobile. (Enabling Tech Asia does not have stakes in these MVNOs, with the exception of BuzzMe.)
Focus on bundles and products

Loke (pic above) said that the company is also focusing on “rewarding” customers, and giving customers value.
For RM25, users will be able to get 30 minutes of voice calls, 30 text messages, and 1.5GB of data. For RM50, customers will be able to get 60 minutes of voice call, 30 text messages and 4GB of data.
The plans are competitive with most of the telcos. Maxis’s Hotlink is offering 5GB of data for RM48 a month, while Digi offers 2GB and 3GB of data for RM28 and RM38 a month, respectively.
What makes Buzzme stands out is the way it reward its customers. For example, subscribers will be able to get 4 points after making RM20 worth of voice calls, 5 points whenever they subscribe to Smart Surf 1GB plan, etc.
Points can then be redeemed for free credits or merchandises.
Meanwhile, it is also awarding “free gift certificates” whenever customers reload a minimum of RM100 in a single transaction. The partners for these gift certificates include Centro Hair Salon, ZTE, Breakout Escape Game, Lancelot Tea-Guild, SanDisk, and others.
While the free gift certificate deal may be attractive, but it raises a question on whether will consumers bite the bait. After all, the average amount spent by prepaid users are less than RM50 a month.
So why would Buzzme customers reload RM100?
“When they do that, not only they can get the free gift certificates, but also a three months validity. So in other words, with RM100, they can get the free gift and also to talk and surf for three months,” said Loke.
Plans for the future
With Thailand expansion completed, the company is now eyeing on its next markets.
“We hope to expand to Indonesia by end of this year. We have identified the partner mobile operator. Unlike our Thailand expansion, which involves acquiring an existing MVNO, our Indonesia expansion plan is more about co-branding initiative with existing mobile operator,” said Loke.
Post Indonesia, it hopes to expand to Philippines by first half next year, and Myanmar by end of next year.

The Mega Tron : Lessons in Entrepreneurship

by Gerald ChuahFebruary 3, 2017

MOBILE technology has definitely changed the way we learn, communicate, do business, acquire entertainment – and live. It is the platform we turn to for breaking news, movie reviews, product launches, and online shopping… the list goes on.

Technology Revolution On Net (TRON), the holding company of Talk Focus Sdn Bhd is the new player in the market to jump into this bandwagon under the capable leadership of Dato’ Sri Dr. Eric Yap.

Yap’s remarkable career as a serial entrepreneur has led him to venture in various industries including insurance, property, construction, travel, security and finally, telecommunications – a long-held dream that was culminated after years of hard work and dogged determination.

A man with clear vision, open heart, astute intelligence, and yes, deep pocket – Yap, seems to have a rare combination of qualities to succeed as an outstanding entrepreneur.

He said: “I like challenges because life is all about facing new difficulties and challenges which makes us stronger. “Everyone faces challenges in life. It’s a matter of how you overcome them and use them to your advantage. After all, success will never be possible without challenges,” he added.

Telco is definitely one of the fastest growing industry in the world today, and owning a telco company is one of Yap’s dream business in his early days, but he did not have the opportunity to venture into this industry.
Two years ago, during his semi-retirement phase, one of his old friend came out with a proposal, and invited him to invest in the company.

“I was attracted to his proposal and jumped onto this chance to venture into the telecommunication business,” said Yap.

Although the Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) industry was totally new to him then, he had to sacrifice his own time to learn as much as possible about the business.

Taking one of the – challenges of his entrepreneurial career, Yap rolled up his sleeves and worked his way towards the technical and operational side of things.

Undeterred by competition amongst giants, he relished the challenge, and saw it as an opportunity to engage in technology-related businesses, and climb this mountain.
Yap said he had months of sleepless nights gathering information and planning the operations of the company.

“Through it all, I’ve learned to manage my time more productively.”

Now that he has finally got his business up and running, Yap plans to devote his whole attention into it, and not get distracted by other business opportunities as in the past, being wiser from experience.

Many high achievers today were once underdogs in their respective arena. Driven by their vision and mission to succeed, they managed to crack the code by thinking outside the box, and tap into latest trends and technology.

Industry icons like Jack Ma, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg are not only visionaries but masters of discipline, who not only dare to take the challenge, but have the courage to follow through. It is no surprise then, that they have become role models of success for the World to follow.

In a similar vein, the success story of Jack Ma — the billionaire business magnate and philanthropist has inspired Yap to become the dynamic CEO of TRON.

Citing Jack Ma as the person he admires for his innate talents and leadership. Yap said: “You have to admire the man for his vision and tenacity. As a serial entrepreneur, his brilliance is not only finding the business blueprint, but having the strength and determination to drive his dreams to reality.

“He serves as a mentor, inspiring me to move TRON to the next level and making me who I am today.”

As they say, `No Venture No Gain,’ and `Fortune Favors The Bold,’ so Yap’s success proves that these lessons ultimately apply in business as well as in life.

“It takes a lot to succeed. When times are hard, spend less and save more, or get an extra job,” advised Yap on how to survive the hard times, as his guru used to say.

As Asia’s first Mobile Virtual Network Aggregator (MVNA), EA offers brands integrated solutions from licensing, billing, and technical solutions to call centre support, to enable companies get to market speedily, easily and at a lower cost.

In Malaysia, U Mobile will provide the exclusive network connectivity, in a commercial agreement sealed today between EA’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Loke Yee Siong and U Mobile’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Jaffa Sany Ariffin.

EA also launched its own prepaid mobile services, Buzz Me, priced at RM10 and RM30 with the prefix 011-34, available nationwide.

“We are delighted to be the first in Asia to offer companies the opportunity to revolutionize their business model.  Brands with their own branded mobile services are able to generate sustainable and additional revenue by connecting directly with their consumers.

“With EA, brands can launch their mobile services speedily and easily; in less than 90 days, and at lower cost than trying to do this with the telcos.

“We are confident of launching mobile services for five brands within 12 months. We are in talks with companies who are impressed with the proven model overseas where Mobile Virtual Network Operators or MVNOs are prevalent and profitable,” Loke said adding that successful MVNOs include Tesco Mobile and Ikea Family in the UK, as well as 7-Connect by 7 Eleven in Singapore.

ICT Consultancy, Ovum in its report “Global MVNO Outlook 2010-2015” reported that global MVNOs revenues are estimated to be US$9.5 billion by 2015 with MVNO revenue in Asia Pacific expected to hit US$980 million and Malaysia, US$65 million.

U Mobile CEO Jaffa Sany Ariffin said the partnership with EA was a win-win collaboration which would help expand its customer base and reach new customer segments. With the partnership, Jaffa also mentioned that he anticipates U Mobile’s subscriber base to grow from its four million mark now, although no quoted numbers were given. Earlier in the year, U Mobile  announced that it aims to capture between 15% and 20% of subscribers marketshare within five years, up from the current 10% it has now.

Market Insights:

Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) are wireless communication service providers who do not have network infrastructure of their own, but offer wireless communication services through an agreement/contract with other mobile network operators. Thus, MVNOs gain bulk access to communication services at wholesale rates and set retail price of their offerings independently. Similar to mobile network operators, MVNOs may have their own customer service centers, billing systems, and even subscriber identity module (SIM) card under their own brand name. The issues related with technical complexities (network and IT integration between the MVNO and operator) and cost (both capital expenditure and operating expenditure) are some of the factors inhibiting the market growth. However, the impact of these challenges is expected to subdue over the forecast period since such issues are now majorly addressed by MVNAs (Mobile Virtual Network Aggregators) and MVNEs (Mobile Virtual Network Enablers), who act as facilitators between MVNOs and mobile network operators.

Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) Market

Success Factors:

Some of the critical factors that hold key to succeed in the global Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) market include

  • Robust Sales and Distribution Network

It enables MVNOs to react quickly to the ever-changing demands and meet customer requirements effectively. The bigger the sales and distribution network, easier it becomes for customers to avail MVNO service.

  • Unique Value Proposition

Unlike traditional network operators who purely focus on mass markets, MVNOs should strive to understand distinct requirements of different end-use segments and develop unique service offerings accordingly. MVNOs should target one of the niche end-use segments and provide competitive and distinct plans with the operator.

  • Strategic Partnerships Across the Value Chain

Another key success factor for MVNOs is to build strong partnership with an operator, thereby ensuring a balanced revenue-sharing model to support their business and operating model.

  • Customer Base

An existing customer base is crucial to MVNO success. In the recent past, many successful MVNOs have been successful in penetrating the telecom market by using the existing customer bases of their allies.
