Fluidigm (FLDM +54.0%), fresh off of a volatility halt, is up on more than triple normal volume clearing a five-week base in apparent response to an article in The Guardian about a DARPA-funded COVID-19 assay that can potentially identify carriers before they become infectious.

The blood test could possibly detect the presence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as early as 24 hours after infection, about four days earlier than current assays, by "looking at the body's immune response to the virus." It runs on the same polymerase chain reaction (PCR) gear used with nasal or throat swabs.

If the FDA signs off on emergency use, the test could be rolled out in about a month.

DARPA is collaborating with medical schools at Mount Sinai, Duke and Princeton and Fluidigm on the project.

Coronaviruses were first discovered in the 1930s when an acute respiratory infection of domesticated chickens was shown to be caused by infectious bronchitis virus (IBV).[9] Arthur Schalk and M.C. Hawn described in 1931 a new respiratory infection of chickens in North Dakota. The infection of new-born chicks was characterized by gasping and listlessness. The mortality rate of the chicks was 40–90%.[10] Fred Beaudette and Charles Hudson six years later successfully isolated and cultivated the infectious bronchitis virus which caused the disease.[11] In the 1940s, two more animal coronaviruses, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), were isolated.[12] It was not realized at the time that these three different viruses were related.[13]

Human coronaviruses were discovered in the 1960s.[14][15] They were isolated using two different methods in the United Kingdom and the United States.[16] E.C. Kendall, David Tyrrell and Malcom Byone working at the Common Cold Unit of the British Medical Research Council in 1960 isolated from a boy a novel common cold virus B814.[17][18][19] The virus was not able to be cultivated using standards techniques which had successfully cultivated rhinoviruses, adenoviruses and other known common cold viruses. The two novel strains B814 and 229E were subsequently imaged by electron microscopy in 1967 by Scottish virologist June Almeida at St. Thomas Hospital in London.[23][24] Almeida through electron microscopy was able to show that B814 and 229E were morphologically related by their distinctive club-like spikes. Not only were they related with each other, but they were morphologically related to infectious bronchitis virus (IBV).[25] A research group at the National Institute of Health the same year was able to isolate another member of this new group of viruses using organ culture and named the virus strain OC43 (OC for organ culture).[26] Like B814, 229E, and IBV, the novel cold virus OC43 had distinctive club-like spikes when observed with the electron microscope.[27][28]

The IBV-like novel cold viruses were soon shown to be also morphologically related to the mouse hepatitis virus.[12] This new group of IBV-like viruses came to be known as coronaviruses after their distinctive morphological appearance.[8] Human coronavirus 229E and human coronavirus OC43 continued to be studied in subsequent decades.[29][30] The coronavirus strain B814 was lost. It is not known which present human coronavirus it was.[31] Other human coronaviruses have since been identified, including SARS-CoV in 2003, HCoV NL63 in 2004, HKU1 in 2005, MERS-CoV in 2012, and SARS-CoV-2 in 2019.[32][33] There have also been a large number of animal coronaviruses identified since the 1960s.[5]

The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command hosted the 48th Annual Technological Cooperation Sub-Committee, Medical Working Group (TCSC) Nov. 15-16 at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The Republic of Korea Armed Forces Medical Command (ROK AFMC) and the USAMRMC take turns each year hosting the meeting.

Visitors from the ROK AFMC traveled from Korea to discuss important and emerging topics in military health care with USAMRMC personnel. They met at the USAMRMC headquarters for two days of collaborative discussions on important topics such as antimalarial drug development, pain management, regenerative medicine and vaccine development.

The primary objective of the meeting was to exchange ideas and discuss potential opportunities for future collaboration. This annual meeting provided a forum for representatives from Korea to continue discussions from previous meetings and introduce new topics and potential joint efforts. Brig. Gen. Jong Seong Ahn, Commanding General Armed Forces Medical Command (AFMC), Republic of Korea and Maj. Gen. Barbara R. Holcomb, Commanding General, USAMRMC and Fort Detrick were in attendance for briefings led by subject matter experts on topics such as skin decontamination products, botulinum vaccines and antimalarial drug development at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

In addition to the interdisciplinary conversations, attendees visited the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) for an overview and tour of the research lab.

The United States conducted seven briefings--one of which included scrub typhus research at the Armed Forces Research Institute of Medical Sciences, by Dr. Christina Farris, Naval Medical Research Center. Farris presented the research on scrub typhus and discussed the other ways that AFRIMS supports military research.

The two-day event concluded with special recognitions, meeting action items, discussion of future collaborations and topics for next year's 49th TCSC meeting and a signing ceremony. Farmers say they can't sell their vegetables because restaurants are closed.

I went to buy food supplies this morning, sometimes they sell a case of fruits and vegetables nearing the end of their shelf life for 1 euro. There were at least 10 such cases, usually there are not more than 2.

I took one, waaay heavier than usual Maybe 20 kilos (44 pounds) in the thing. All for 1 euro.

1. They were playing with fire (making a virus STRONGER and more INFECTIOUS -- This is called 'Gain of Function') and set the world ablaze through an accident (virus escaped). Think kids with a chemistry set, willy nilly combining different chemicals and subsequently burning the house down.

2. It was designed as a bio weapon and escaped. It was in the early stages of development, and escaped before they could make it more lethal.

I have a book around here somewhere, work of fiction, the premise was that some biopharaceutical company would infect people with the virus in antibiotics, then come up with a vaccine that they already had on hand after millions died.

Another book here somewhere suggests that a virus was introduced to cull the species. Those in the circle were immunized. Think it was a tom Clancey novel. At they end he ordered the criminals to strip naked and go into the jungle to commune with nature.
