Aztec Land and Cattle Company, Limited was formed in 1884 and incorporated in New York early 1885 to own land in Navajo County, Arizona. The Aztec Land and Cattle Company, Limited purchased a 1,000,000-acre tract of land in northern Arizona from the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad for $500,000 ($.50 per acre), imported approximately 32,000 head of cattle branded with the Hashknife brand from Texas, and commenced ranching operations in Arizona. Since the 1960s, the focused has been primarily on acquiring land to consolidate its holdings and, over time, develop them. It manages several related entities – Aztec Land Company, LLC , Aztec East Jeffers, LLC and Aztec Despain Ranch, LLC. Combined, the company and its related entities own approximately 239,000 acres of surface land and 318,000 acres of mineral rights. Revenues are derived primarily from various leases of its land, including solar and wind renewable energy development leases, grazing leases, and sand and gravel mining leases.
The company had a membership interest in Snowflake Land JV, LLC, which it liquidated in 2017, and has a membership interest in The Apache Railroad Company, LLC, the sole shareholder of The Apache Railway Company.
