Athens Bancshares Corporation is a unitary savings and loan holding company for Athens Federal Community Bank (the Bank), which is a stock savings bank. Its principal business activity is the ownership of the outstanding shares of common stock of the Bank. The Bank operates as a community-oriented financial institution offering traditional financial services to consumers and businesses in its primary market area. The Company attracts deposits from the general public and use those funds to originate primarily residential mortgage loans and, to a lesser extent, non-residential real estate loans, construction loans, land and land development loans, multi-family real estate loans, consumer loans and commercial business loans. It conducts its lending and deposit activities primarily with individuals and small businesses in its primary market area. On January 6, 2010, the Bank converted to a stock savings bank and became the wholly owned subsidiary of the Company.
