Ascent Solar Technologies, Inc. (ASTI) is the most recent company created by ITN Energy Systems who established AST in 2005 to manufacturer state of the art, thin-film monolithically-integrated CIGS flexible photovoltaic modules. Ascent Solar was formed by ITN in order to commercialize CIGS Photovoltaic technology. Since 1994 ITN has performed approximately 35 contracts for private and government entities in advanced PV technologies. Government sponsors of these contracts include the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the National Science Foundation, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Missile Defense Agency and NASA. Through its work on these contracts, ITN has developed useful and proprietary processing and manufacturing know-how applicable to PV products generally and CIGS PV products in particular, including the creation and adoption of key processing technologies and the development of a monolithic integration fabrication process.
After two decades of research and development, Ascent Solar was formed in 2005, to commercialize leading-edge CIGS photovoltaic technology on flexible, plastic substrate.
Ascent’s unique monolithic integration process enables the highest level of efficiency, durability & weight savings representing the potential to transform the way solar power can be used in everyday life. Ascent Solar’s Research and Development and its 30 MW nameplate production facility is in Thornton, Colorado.
By pioneering a technology that is recognized as the future of the solar industry, Ascent has cemented itself as the leader in the manufacturing of innovative, high performance, flexible thin-film solar panels for both existing and emerging defense, consumer electronic, off-grid, transportation and building applications.
Ascent’s results-oriented team is focused on continued technical innovation while effectively developing current market opportunities and enabling customers to create transformational applications using solar power.

Flexible CIGS thin-film producer, Ascent Solar is collaborating withNASA through its Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) initiative to develop low-cost lightweight large area solar arrays
for a range of space applications in the future.
Ascent will be working with Vanguard Space Technologies, which has proprietary space environment protection technology as well automated manufacturing approaches to produce the large-area arrays.
Dr. Joseph Armstrong, chief technology officer of Ascent Solar said: “Existing and emerging space solar cell technologies, particularly when utilised in very large-scale solar arrays, can present problems to the spacecraft designer, both in terms of cost and availability. By starting with our production CIGS monolithically-integrated modules, we can provide Vanguard with a module that is tuned for the space environment, and in a similar way to our products enabling novel commercial goods, our space CIGS modules will enable Vanguard to utilise its unique protective coating and design expertise to succeed in their goal of providing NASA an economical pathway for powering these future missions.”
