A Word on Gamma and X-ray
Rad Source made its first definitive performance comparison for its x-ray systems in an application to the FDA for substantial equivalency between a cesium transfusion blood irradiator and the Rad Source RS 3000 x-ray irradiator. The substantial equivalency was granted in 1998 (In 2003 Rad Source licensed the RS 3000 blood irradiator to MDS Nordion where it is sold under the name RAYCELL™ and is now in major healthcare facilities and blood banks throughout the world).
Since that time a number of peer reviewed publications have reinforced this equivalency. The issue of comparing gamma produced photons with x-produced photons is not whether there is comparable biological effect but whether there is comparable uniformity of energy transfer throughout the product being irradiated. (A Gy is the photon energy transfer per unit volume) Note that it is not dependent upon the source of the photon. Higher energy photons produced by gamma sources are more penetrating. Therefore, at some product density and thickness, the lower energy photons produced by x-ray will be absorbed before distributing energy completely through the product. However, if the product is not dense enough or thick enough to absorb all the energy of the low energy photons then the energy delivered to the product can easily be made equal to that using the high-energy photons from the gamma.
In fact, the remaining high energy of the gamma photons is wasted once the photons have passed through the product. That excess high energy results in the very heavy shielding common to all self contained gamma irradiators. The Rad Source Intellectual Property deals with ways to insure that the products irradiated by our equipment have the same dose distribution as those treated with high energy gamma produced photons. This results in Rad Source’s superiority in comparison to traditional x-ray equipment integrators.
