Chessmite – nice composite of points! I like this one in particular:
"....and says that the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Thick-Shell technology will be integrated with a variety of the composite tetrapod quantum dots to develop a line of advanced high performance quantum dots."
Several significant points in this one paragraph. 1) LANL, 2) variety and 3) advanced high performance.
Partnering with LANL is huge, they see what Rice recognized years ago when they renegotiated licensing terms for the TQD to QMC – high volume mass production. The second key word here is variety, not just the CdSe we tend to always relate the TQD to. Many patents are for In, Ga, Pb …with different shells, so being able to manufacture many types with the newly licensed thick shell technology using the proprietary microfluidic-reactor is a game changer for the industry. The third is the advanced high performance LANL thick shell patent # 7,935,419 Thick-shell nanocrystal quantum dots being incorporated into the QMC process. This took some of the advantages the Tetrapod Quantum Dot had before and puts it on steroids with added bulk to boot! This really does create a NanoMonster.
It has super powers with laser eyes from increased brightness. Its FWHM strength delivers a color so pure it stuns you. It has an impenetrable shield or special aura that prevents photobleaching, keeping it as vibrant as the day it was created. Its shell, being of many layers make it tough to the core. It is not afraid of getting wet and is impervious to chemical attack from fluids like Hexane. In its arsenal of super weapons its intensive energy (eV) is derived from multi-exciton emissions and the fear of all fear is it is non-blinking, it never stops. It is relentless to shine superior! .
Combine those attributes with consistency, one of the most significant and overlooked competitive advantages QMC has with the microfluidic-reactor process. Being able to reliably reproduce the same quality product throughout the production process is superior to all batch synthesis techniques. Timing, temperature and maintaining the exact component element ratio’s is paramount to the process for a consistently high quality product. The reactors, for lack of a better breakdown at this time, are just but one piece in the process that will drive a stake into the competitions heart. Will the competition survive? Depends on how long they wait to get assistance before they bleed out when QMC makes the death move.
It’s a superhero, villain struggle currently, where it looks like the villain (3M/Nanosys Dow/Nanoco) currently have unstoppable powers against the NanoMonster (QMC) and will take over mass production for the world. The truth is you’re looking at a classic example like Ford who brought the car industry to the world and Mercedes who brought the upscale quality with performance to the car world. Nanoco and Nanosys may have introduced the Quantum Dots to the world but I believe it’s QMC who is bringing the high performance, impeccable quality and customized product to the stage with the mass production advantage that Ford became famous for. IMO when it’s all said and done NanoMonster, for the good of all mankind, will blow their doors off and leave them spinning in a cloud of “What just happened?”
