One issue with the pond reclamation was finding top soil cover to plant DRMS approved vegetation. Then there's the other problem of elevation; the property is almost at the treeline, lack of humidity, short growing season, and generally low temperatures.
It's still done in similar regions - for example, Iceland grows 80% of the country's vegetables in local climate controlled greenhouses; however, the regions volcanic thermal resources allow for both power for lighting and internal heating.
