More from Tamar Wise on CBD from Hemp

It appears the original comments from Tamar Wise, former Science Director at Dixie (or someone claiming to be her), actually hit the web several days ago.

I found another Facebook page, Offer Hope for Landon (a little boy with Leukemia) where they had reposted her original comment, and she responded in a series of additional comments

The following are her comments from that Facebook page, and they do not paint a good picture of CBD from Hemp, at least as processed by companies like MJNA (and probably CannaVest as well, since she mentions RSHO.)

In a nutshell, she says that, the CBD in the final product, because of the processing, has cellulose in it that makes it harder for the body to absorb. IOW, it's less efficient.

Oh, and the microbes still present break down the CBD over time, so it becomes weaker with age.

IMO, this might be okay for things like tinctures or gum, where one doesn't need a big dose of CBD, but could mean that higher dose applications are less effective.

Here follows the Facebook repost by Landon's Parents and her comments (The author's name is in bold):

Offer Hope for Landon

Anyone that is getting medicine from Dixie Botanicals, please read this. This is what I have been saying all along. Cannabis is ILLEGAL TO SHIP OR TRANSPORT across state lines!!!! If your 'meds' are being shipped to you, it is not CBD and it is not CANNABIS!!! I know that people are so desperate to help their children, just as desperate as we were to help Landon. But PLEASE be careful!!!!

This was posted publicly in Denver from the former Dixie Botanicals head of Dixie Science, Tamar Wise:

I'm tired of so called CBD companies claiming that what they provide is medicine. Anyone using a CBD from hemp product please be aware of what you are actually getting b/c it is not what you think. These formulations start with a crude and dirty hemp paste (contaminated with microbial life! I have seen this and these organisms decompose the paste. The paste perhaps even contains residual solvent and other toxins as the extraction is done in CHINA) made in a process that actually renders it unfit for human consumption. What these companies are doing is criminal and dangerous. In fact MJNA's RSHO is literally just this hemp paste diluted in hemp seed oil. No refinement at all!!! And what Dixie Botanicals is offering is beyond disturbing. I cannot keep quiet anymore. And since I formulated most of these products as head of Dixie Science, I feel responsible for spreading the truth. I left Dixie for ethical reasons but it is not enough to just walk away. These frauds need to be exposed for what they are. Look out for my tell all article coming soon and feel free to contact me directly with questions as it is time to blow the whistle. Let's keep this industry pure and safe.

And with that being said, the work that The Realm of Caring is doing should be commended. It is nice to see a group that cares about patient safety and the purity of their medicines. Kudos to the Josh Stanley and his brother and their group. Keep up the good work! You are an inspiration!

Tamar Wise Hello everyone, I just wanted to make a quick clarification. CBD from cannabis and CBD from hemp are scientifically the same thing. It is the legality that separates them right now. So you are right that it is illegal to ship anything cannabis, including CBD from cannabis (referred to as 'drug type' strain) across state lines. But it IS technically legal to ship CBD from hemp (non-psychoactive fiber type) as long as it has less than .3% THC and is actually from hemp not cannabis. What bothered me was the quality of extract this company was using (very crude) and the lack of any standards or quality control for safety. So while it IS legal to ship this hemp CBD medicine, it is not as pure and safe as these companies will lead you to believe. Nor is it as strong or efficient as alternatives. With that being said, there are companies out there that are offering safe CBD medicine from hemp, they are just quietly going through clinical studies first...so no product is available yet. And CBD from cannabis can be concentrated more b/c the extract and grow can be controlled. Hope this helps.

Tamar Wise Thank you so much. I appreciate all the support. Just want to see the purest medicine available for the people, and especially children, that need it the most. I am so happy to see Landon's progress!

Offer Hope for Landon Also, just a quick question for our epilepsy patients, if CBD from hemp is the same as CBD from cannabis, then why is the CBD from hemp not working to stop the seizures and the CBD from the cannabis is stopping the seizures? I am still in the learning curve as my grandson, Landon, has cancer and not epilepsy! Thanks!! Grammy Wendy

Kane Slater I think the answer is that "RSHO" is made from regular low-CBD Hemp grown for fibre and the concentrated oil maxes out at 24% CBD (for $80 per gram), but "Charlotte's Web" and other high-CBD strains from specially-bred plants start out at ... I've heard various numbers from 17 -21% CBD ... so when made into oil will be closer to 80% CBD (ie. real medicine).

So the short answer is that RSHO is not very good at controlling seizures because it is junk, really expensive junk.

Tamar Wise That is a very valid question, Wendy. For severe endocannabinoid deficiencies (cancer and seizures are now being looked at as being caused by too little natural endocannabinoids being made or too little CB receptors being available) addition of phytocannabinoids from either cannabis or hemp will help b/c they are the same. The ultimate difference comes down to not only the plant strains themselves but the formulations and subsequent ratios of the cannabinoids as well as terpenoids and flavonoids (plus other unknown synergistic elements~ cannabis/hemp have over 500 constituents). For example, a CO2 extract from cannabis will have a different profile and therefore effect than say an alcohol extract made from the exact same cannabis plant. Similarly the same extraction (say alcohol) done on cannabis and hemp will yield different oils with ratios inherent to the separate strains themselves (ie hemp has more CBG, cannabis has more THC etc). Although alcohol will extract both very similarly, there will be subtle differences based on each plants original makeup. What exacerbates the CBD situation is that most of the hemp companies use an unknown extraction method and what is extracted is a different part of the plant than what is commonly used (most people extract from bud or leaf of either hemp or cannabis~b/c that is where the highest concentration is.) So now not only are you comparing the differences in the strains (hemp v MJ) themselves but an extract done on flower of one vs say the stalk of the other are even more different. So what you are seeing is that right now most hemp CBD oil contains a LOT of cellulose and lignin and other "filler" molecules that don't serve a medicinal purpose b/c they are taken from the part of the plant that has the LEAST amount of cannabinoids (for the legal issues around THC): the stem/stalk. These filler molecules essentially just muddy up the extract, making it more difficult for your body to absorb the needed cannabinoids. B/c they are not as accessible. Conversely, an extract made from cannabis will be from the bud or leaf and therefore it won't have as much cellulose etc "blocking" the cannabinoids' action. It basically comes down to the higher amount of control formulators of CANNABIS CBD have right now over growing the plant, the solvent used and part of the plant extracted. Plus b/c cannabis has been altered by humans so much, we see these high CBD concentrations. Whereas hemp has been cultivated for seed and stalk production and not cannabinoid content (yet) so it's CBD levels are way lower. And it is even lower in the stalk! You are basically looking at a weaker more muddied oil from the beginning and that is why it is not as effective. On top of this the process used to break the outer stalk from the inner hurd before extraction, is called retting and it is only supposed to be used for textiles NOT anything ingested. This is due to the microorganisms that are involved in the retting process. They seep into the stalks from the ground and break down the stalk internally so the outer layer can be stripped off. These microorganisms are usually killed in the textile process done to the stalks...but some hemp companies are instead extracting the stalk and including the microlife in their oil!!! Now you have the added element of microbial decomposition. Current hemp CBD oil doesn't work as well b/c it is weaker and less pure but it could also be due to this micro life "eating" away at the medicinal molecules over time. I know, its gross. With all this being said, hemp can be extracted correctly to create formulations similar to cannabis but right now no one in the hemp realm is doing it yet Another factor is that cannabis has a higher amount of THC and some epilepsy patients find that the addition of some THC to their CBD helps immensely (some say 10:1 CBD to THC or other ratios.) Because hemp naturally has way less THC, this could be another factor; you can't get that perfect balance of THC and CBD b/c there is so little THC. Hope this helps, sorry for the long ramble!

Tamar Wise Well said Kane. The base concentrations of cannabinoids in cannabis vs hemp have a lot to do with efficacy. Plus the part of the plant extracted determines how much "crap" is extracted into the oil along with the cannabinoids. Even if you could get the high concentration or specific THC to CBD ratio in hemp that you find in cannabis, if you extract the from the stalk you get a ton of cellulose that "blocks" the cannabinoids regardless of their concentration or ratio. It is just a much less efficient overall model than being able to control your own cannabis CBD formulations

Tamar Wise The stalk of cannabis/hemp is similar to the wood of trees! It contains almost 80% cellulose, lignin, pectin, hemicellulose and other heavily branched, filler molecules. In fact, I like to think of it as a molecular tumbleweed, trapping CBD and other smaller molecules. I have attached a pic of cellulose and lignin. Now imagine a bunch of these molecules in your extract, overlapping and blocking efficacy....

Here, Tamar posts a couple of diagrams for the organic molecules of cellulose and lignin.

She posts two more comments in the thread. The first is in response to someone saying she was fired, and the second, responding to someone asking if she actually wrote these comments. Note that in her response to the first question, she says that her entire science team quit:

Tamar Wise You are right about the legality of hemp as I have posted just now. And I was not fired. I quit with my entire science team for ethical reasons. Also some sales and production left with us...Doesn't that say something about our former company.... Let me know if you have questions. My only goal is to educate and inform people about safety. Cannabinoids are the medicine of the future. Thank you so much for adding that info b/c hemp IS legal and it can be made into safe medicine. By people who care about patients.

November 19 at 9:24am

Tamar Wise I did. I just want the truth to be known. I care about patients and I truly believe that cannabinoids are the medicine of the future. But they need to be pure and safe, like the plant itself. And companies who don't care about quality control shouldn't be making medicine b/c it gives us all a bad name and is a danger to patients. Thank you all for commenting
