Microsoft's continuing problem is the trending away from its core technology: their age was for fat client computers managed by servers...now most apps can be run on cheap tablets via browsers by any number of competitors.

Office and Windows are now their cash cows but the cloud computing paradigm is ever shifting against their current products. Their PaaS platform acknowledges this need to shift, as well as the fact that Microsoft wants all applications on Windows 8 to be distributed through their platform (same as Apple).

Remains to be seen how this will play out.
