Bristol Bay: A win for mining and a win for fishing

New mining project moves to Bristol Bay
In a win for mining in Bristol Bay, Liberty Star, the company that owns a mining prospect adjacent to Pebble Mine called Big Chunk Super Project, has announced it is moving into the neighborhood.
The company declared its intentions to explore the arc-shaped Big Chunk prospect as far back as March 2008. Like Pebble, the Big Chunk Super Project would be for a gold-copper-molybdenum mine or mines. In a press release, Liberty Star said it is in the process of erecting a camp at the site to use as base of operations for exploratory drilling. In the release, the company states it is partnering with an Alaska company, MBGS of Anchorage, for construction of the camp, and for services supporting drilling and operations.
Bristol Bay gets federal grant to support fishing jobs
In a win for fishing in Bristol Bay, President Barack Obama announced the winners of a competitive grant program last week, and Alaska’s Bristol Bay Native Association was one of just 13 projects nationwide picked to receive grant funding.
The Rural Jobs and Innovation Accelerator Challenge, overseen by the United States Department of Agriculture, awards money to projects designed to help grow rural economies. A proposal by the non-profit BBNA’s Bristol Bay Jobs Accelerator Project won $405,023 of the total $9 million in grants. The BBNA project will enhance training programs for fishing and seafood jobs at the Southwest Alaska Vocational and Education Center, according to an Aug. 3 news report in the Bristol Bay Times.
