Emotion - of which greed is obviously just one - deludes the most intelligent minds. Its an emotion like many that cloud judgement.
In his promotion tenure - he's seen so many play the promotion game and they're still going strong.......so he thought he would probably get forgotten too. Or just change aliases and start over like some do.
