Pioneer Trail Energy is the debut plant for BioFuel Energy and is located just outside of Wood River, Nebraska next to an existing Cargill grain elevator. By using existing infrastructure, Pioneer Trail Energy has made use of existing facilities and relationships, connecting quickly to the community and the region, providing greater stability and access to corn.
The Pioneer Trail Facility is one of the most advanced in the industry, utilizing a dry milling system and other advanced production methods. With a production capacity of 115 Million gallons per year, the Pioneer Trail Facility is one of the largest in the nation.
In addition to the ethanol produced, the Pioneer Trail facility produces both wet and dry Distillers grains. This byproduct of the ethanol distillation process is used throughout the country as a high protein feed for all forms of livestock.
Pioneer Trail Energy aims to become one of the most environmentally friendly ethanol production plants by reusing all byproducts of the ethanol distillation process and reducing waste wherever possible.
Due to the large size and expert plant design, this facility is one of the safest and most efficient in the industry. With specialized systems designed to reduce downtime, the Pioneer Trail Facility can operate twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, nearly every week of the year.

Buffalo Lake Energy is the second plant for BioFuel Energy and is located on a major Union Pacific rail line and with direct access to an existing Cargill grain elevator. Buffalo Lake is optimally located for both grain supply and product shipment. Buffalo Lake is one of the most efficient ethanol production plants in the United States. Capable of receiving nearly 40 million bushels of corn per year, this facility is one of the largest, most productive plants in the nation.
Nearly identical to our Pioneer Trail Facility, Buffalo Lake uses a dry milling system and other advanced production methods. Like our Pioneer Trail facility, the Buffalo Lake Plant is one of the largest in the nation, capable of producing 115 million gallons per year and is designed to operate twenty-four hours per day, seven days per week, nearly every week of the year, with minimal down time.
Buffalo Lake produces both wet and dry Distillers grains as byproducts of the ethanol distillation process. The grain is used throughout the country as a high protein feed for all forms of livestock.
By reusing all byproducts of the ethanol distillation process and reducing waste, we plan to become the standard for environmentally friendly ethanol production facilities. .

Ethanol Industry Ethanol is a high octane, clean burning, American-made renewable fuel. Its production and use offer a myriad of benefits to the United States and its citizens.
The production of ethanol is an economic engine for the United States, adding value to U.S. agricultural products and bringing billions of dollars to the nation's economy each year. The use of ethanol reduces harmful auto emissions, offers consumers a cost-effective choice at the pump, and decreases the amount of expensive crude oil needed to satisfy the nation's thirst for transportation fuel.
Ethanol is produced at more than 175 facilities across the nation and blended in to unleaded gasoline in varying percentages. Ethanol is most commonly retailed as E10, the blend of 10 percent ethanol (90% gasoline) for use in all automobiles. Increasingly, ethanol is also available as E85, the 85 percent ethanol blend for use in Flexible Fuel Vehicles. Study is being done on allowing the use of blends beyond 10 percent in standard automobiles
