LAS VEGAS and NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 1995--Wave Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: WAVX) announced today that its Network News Corporation subsidiary unveiled the first-ever, fully-functioning version of its Network News satellite-based news and information delivery service at the COMDEX Expo here in Las Vegas. The Network News system utilizes Wave's proprietary information metering technology to deliver news and information content to users' PCs, in real-time, on a pay-per-story basis, via Hughes Systems' DirecPC satellite service. Information search and filtering software is provided by Verity, Inc., and charter wire service partners include Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, PR Newswire, BusinessWire, Agence France-France Presse and AFX News.

Commenting on the first-ever fully-functioning demonstration of the Network News system, Peter J. Sprague, Chairman of Wave Systems, stated, "Our COMDEX demonstration is the realization of our vision for a secure, hardware-based system that provides some distribution of data and information and enables the individual or corporate user to search for, and purchase, information on piece-by-piece basis. We view the system as ideal for information providers seeking to achieve greater penetration within corporate America and for users who desire both broader access to real-time news and more pricing options."

Mr. L. Sanders Smith, CEO of Network News, said, "The COMDEX demonstration is a resounding success. Our Network News system has been receiving thousands of stories per day via satellite from our Reston, Virginia headquarters. The encrypted stories are then decrypted by the WaveMeter installed in a PC system at the Las Vegas receiving site, allowing visitors to view story headlines and full text transcripts of any items they choose. In addition, visitors were impressed by the powerful filtering capability which allowed them to see COMDEX announcements in near real-time."

Wave Systems Corp. has developed and is commercializing a revolutionary new information metering system based on its proprietary WaveMeter semiconductor chip. The Wave system guarantees owners of electronic content accurate information on how their customers interact with the content (usage, purchasing, quantity, timing, frequency and spending). This gives content owners new marketing options: electronic auditing, pay-per-use pricing and individualized, on-demand products while providing end users with superior convenience and control in obtaining useful content via delivery systems including the Internet, satellite transmission and CD-ROM. The Wave system employs proprietary hardware-based data encryption/decryption technology to protect the security of data and interfaces with sophisticated data search and transaction processing systems.
