Sinovac’s COVID-19 vaccine is said to be effective against new variants

the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech (NASDAQ:SVA) has shown efficacy against the variants first detected in the
U.K. and South Africa,
an official from Butantan biomedical center, the company’s Brazilian partner has said.


“We have tested this vaccine in China against the English and the South African variants,
with good results,” said Dimas Covas,
CEO of Butantan without offering further details.

The tests are also underway to evaluate its efficacy against the Brazilian variant, he has added.

Based on results from late-stage trials, the vaccine based on an inactivated virus has shown 100% and 83.7% efficacy against hospitalized/
severe/
fatal cases and
cases requiring medical treatment, respectively.
