HOBM is Heavy Oil-Based Mud - it is a specialty drilling fluid.

One component of HOBM is atmospheric gas-oil (AGO), also known as raw diesel. AGO is side-stripped from the main column, reboiled, and used as feedstock in most cases for other products.

As a component in HOBM, AGO/raw diesel forms the "oil" component.

HOBM is used in certain applications where the geology, typically a very hard, low-permeability shale is being drilled, or in some cases where the field is over-pressure, and HOBM forms an effective medium for well bore pressure control. The use of HOBM is formation/field dependent, and highly regionalized.
