Craigslist Ad Shows Food Stamp Cards Being Sold Illegally in Florida

ON OCTOBER 21, 2017 AT 10:26AM

A report out of Miami this week revealed advertisements have been popping up on the classifieds website Craigslist offering food stamp cards for money.

While such ads certainly aren’t new by any means, as noted in a report by Fox News a couple years back, what’s particularly troubling about these ads is that they appear to involve “(a) program meant to taxpayer-funded affected by Hurricane Irma, according to Miami station WSVN.

An investigation by the station uncovered several Craigslist ads “where people are selling taxpayer-funded food assistance cards, trying to make money off the disaster.”

“Makes me feel a little angry because you have people that really need food,” said local resident Larry Thomas, whose family, including his five kids, lost all their food during Hurricane Irma.

“Shame on you, shame on you,” added another local resident, Renita Holmes. “Especially if you’re selling it just to get some extra cash.”

To be clear, these ads might not be for real (Craigslist ads are as subject to fakery as any other part of the internet), but I highly doubt that’s the case. For one, it’s an indisputable fact that food stamp trafficking is a problem in America.

A report published four years ago by the Food and Nutrition Service agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that a stunning $858 million in food stamps were trafficked between 2009 and 2011 alone.

Given that the consumption of food stamps rose dramatically during former President Barack Obama’s time in office, it stands to reason food stamp trafficking did as well.

And herein lies one of the many legitimate reasons why President Donald J. Trump seeks to overhaul the entire welfare system.

“We must reform our welfare system so that it does not discourage able-bodied adults from working, which takes away scarce resources from those in real need,” he wrote earlier this year in a letter to Congress accompanying his proposed 2018 budget. “Work must be the center of our social policy.”

The goal is to make welfare less of an abused program — particularly one that promotes an attitude of entitlement — and instead convert it into a system that helps those down on their luck while giving them an incentive to work hard toward rebuilding their lives.

The goal is to also ensure that public money is doled out only to those who genuinely need and deserve it.

“People are taking advantage of the system and then other people aren’t receiving what they really need to live,” Trump said this week, according to The Hill. “And we think it’s very unfair to them.”

Very unfair indeed to men like Larry Thomas, whose family deserves better than to see foods stamps reserved for victims like them being sold for a cut rate on Craigslist.
