They'd be better off bringing an apple, carrot, banana and sandwich from home. We are breeding laziness in the US of A, and a lot of it comes from the food stamp program.
I well remember getting gov surplus supplies before the food stamp program. It supplied the ingredients and we had more than enough. We all learned to cook, and yes, my father took a lunch box to work and we took one to school. I totally refused the free lunch program, I totally disagree with it. Taking responsibility from the parents is completely evil IMO, it leads and lead to even worse parenting and more gov control. Look at the prevalent "snowflakes".
All my kids either took a lunch to school or lived with their decision to not take one and ate when they got home. None are overweight.
