My system is three years old and it's still great. Core i7, 16 GB of RAM, SSD, fast communications ports, able to power a couple of external monitors.

Would a faster CPU or more cores do more for me? Probably not. What I would upgrade for would be better battery life (I get 5.5 hours) with the same performance, ability to access 32 GB of RAM. I find myself using desktops less and less because this laptop has comparable power to my Nehalem Core i7 processors.

And I would like to play around with Coffee Lake and AVX-512. What I'd really like is a 64-word permute instruction or the ability to do the equivalent in a few instructions. I'd still like to solve the problem of Huffman Decoding and de-triangle-ization via SIMD instructions. I'd love it if Intel just put in an instruction to do this operation as just about every consumer system does this quite a bit.
