The '3rd rail' of politics these days, which is sure to get the Deep State attack dogs against you, includes -
1) Proposing to re-regulate the financial sector and Wall Street
2) Wanting peace instead of endless wars
The US people may want these things, and occasionally a politician will pay them lip service, but if any politician in a position to actually implement #1,2 seriously tries to do it, their days in politics will be ended by the Deep State.
Looking at #2, we know there have been two main Deep State factions in the US, the Neocons (AIPAC) and the more traditional Trilaterals (Rockefeller wing). While they agree on the goal of world domination, how to get there is the question. As Webster Tarpley has pointed out, the Neocons are obsessed with the Middle East, while the Trilaterals take a broader view and see Russia and China as the most important obstacles to focus on, with the Middle East secondary.
Listening to Rickards, who has Deep State connections, the strategy of at least part of the Deep State (presumably the Trilaterals) is to try to strategically weaken the relationship between Russia and China (ala Nixon/Kissinger) by having the US improve relations with Russia. Then once the Russia-China bond is weakened, the US can proceed against a more isolated China.
In this strategy, Syria and Iran are a sideshow that can be bypassed and addressed later. But the Neocons would strongly object, preferring instead to do whatever it takes to oust Assad, then go after Iran, and then proceed against Russia and China.
The recent deaths of David Rockefeller and Zbigniew Brzezinski could represent a symbolic end of an era for the Trilaterals. Kissinger still has Trump's ear, and Sec of State Tillerson is a Rockefeller man, but the Neocon faction has had a resurgence after being largely ousted in the 2nd term of Bush Jr. The Neocons also control much of the mainstream media, and thus control public opinion to a large extent.
Ideally the Deep State wanted to remove Assad 5 years ago, right after the successful removal of Gaddafi, then go after Iran, and then start the destabilization of Russia. But this timetable was shot to hell by Putin, so what will the new strategy be?
One approach would be to admit defeat in Syria, bypass it and Iran, and go ahead with the destabilization of Russia. Another would be to ally with Russia and go after China (of course another would be to forget about world domination and just compete economically and have good relations with everyone - the best approach, but obviously a non-starter for the ghouls of the NWO).
But by being so aggressive and reckless in their goal of world domination, the Deep State has managed to forge an extremely strong bond between Russia and China. So it's back to the drawing board for the Deep State ghouls, who richly deserve to lose. Best to send the crazies back to the basement, but with the decline of the Trilaterals, there is no competing faction strong enough to do that.
