Yes, I guess we have to be fair to Mr. Dahl. It's impossible to say unequivocally that an inert object like, say, a rock or a loaf of bread would have done a better job. We can assume that that's true, based on the evidence of our own eyes, but we can never know for sure. That must be why Mr. Yaldoo is willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Switching to another person, or even a non-sentient piece of matter would necessarily entail some risk.
