Shorting's not like being long. Longs can collect dividends; shorts must sometimes pay them. Longs have tax advantages. A short position can be called in. Losses on short positions are open ended. Plus shorts are betting against the well established trend, since the beginning of stock trading. Stocks usually rise.

In really tough times the government may work to help longs. Have you ever heard of a government policy to help beleaguered shorts?

Shorting Sears for the past 5 to 10 years hasn't been a great move. All of my blue chips have at least doubled during that time. Plus I've collected dividends (generally rising dividends).
