Draft of text for Dept. Interior letter:

If we hope to live in a great country, we should disapprove of the seizure of goods from citizens without compensation, and thorough prior justification by public benefit.

In all cases of contemplated seizures of private property three rules should apply. These rules are stated and considered here in the case of the taking required to establish the Ironwood National Forest Monument:

The scientific claims must be sound. They were not.
The public benefit must be substantially greater than the public loss: It was not.
Private parties must be reasonably compensated: They were not.

A government determined to encourage greatness must not allow such actions to stand.

The Ironwood National Forest Monument decision should be reversed.
