Wounded Warrior Project Career Boot Camp Empowers Veterans
PR NEWSWIRE 8:27 AM ET 6/9/2017
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. , June 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dozens of veterans and family members recently took a crash course in their next career, spending four days learning everything from creating resumes to negotiating a salary.

Wounded Warrior Project teamed up with Onward to Opportunity to host dozens of veterans and families for a career bootcamp. Warriors and family learned about resumes, networking, interviewing, and preparation needed for different career fields.

The group heard from experts in finance, human resources, internet technology, customer service, project management, and more. The goal: identify the skills needed in each field and steer veterans toward the right track.

"This is a great stepping stone to get on the path to a career," said Navy veteran John Collins. "If you are active duty now, it is a great opportunity to get started."

Veterans and family members also learned about personal finance, networked with potential employers, and even participated in mock interviews. Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) partnered with Onward to Opportunity, a career skills program free to veterans.

"I'm not doing this alone. Having all these organizations standing behind the veterans and Wounded Warrior Project gives me energy and excitement for my second career," another veteran said.

The group also learned about WWP and its free programs and services offered to today's generation of wounded veterans. WWP connects warriors to one another and their communities; serves them with life-saving programs focused on mental and physical health, career and benefits counseling, and long-term care for the most seriously wounded veterans; and empowers these warriors to live life on their terms.

"Being able to reach out to folks for help, just bounce ideas off people, and utilize the folks that may be doing the same thing you are doing – that is probably the biggest take away from this experience," said Navy veteran Shawn Lewis. "You got to get out and meet people – and allow them to help you."

After the four-day boot camp, these veterans are empowered to expand their career search and informed with the best way to land interviews – and ace them. They are also enrolled in an online course to increase their skills in their desired field.

“But I don’t want to go among mad people,” said Alice.
“Oh, you can’t help that,” said the cat.

“We’re all mad here.”
