11:14 ET - McDonald's(MCD) employees, other low-wage workers and union members emptied from about a dozen buses to protest outside the hamburger chain's headquarters this morning during the shareholders meeting in Oak Brook, Ill. The protesters, many whom also marched Tuesday in downtown Chicago, are demanding a $15-an-hour minimum wage and the right to form a union. The vast majority of McDonald's(MCD) stores are operated by franchisees, and those local owners set wages. Darius Cephas, a McDonald's(MCD) worker from Boston and a protest organizer, rejected that the corporation can't set wage policy. "They're in there setting the rules," he said. "If they can tell stores to serve breakfast all day, they can tell stores to pay their workers $15 an hour." ([e-mail]; @ericmorath)
