May 09--Charlotte-based Duke Energy(DUK) said Tuesday it had a 3.2 percent increase in first-quarter profit, as last year's acquisition of Piedmont Natural Gas helped the utility's results.
Duke reported profit of $716 million, or $1.02 per share, in the first quarter ended March 31, compared with $694 million, or $1.01 per share, a year earlier.
Adjusted earnings per share were $1.04, down from $1.13 in the first quarter of 2016 and below the $1.06 expected by analysts polled by Zacks Investment Research. The utility attributed the decline from a year ago largely to the sale of its international energy business last year and warm winter weather.
In early morning trading, Duke shares were down less that 1 percent to $82.63.
The company is scheduled to discuss the latest results with analysts during a 10 a.m. conference call.
