Dale Earnhardt Jr. will retire after the 2017 NASCAR season, Hendrick Motorsports announced Tuesday.
Yahoo Sports reported the 42-year-old's decision would be explained in a press conference at Hendrick later Tuesday.
Earnhardt Jr. missed a large chunk of the 2016 season with concussion-like symptoms. He had suffered multiple head injuries during his long career and had pledged to donate his brain to science.
Earnhardt Jr. is the second high-profile driver to retire in the last few months. Carl Edwards, 37, shocked the sport by retiring after the 2016 season.
The younger Earnhardt Jr., who began his NASCAR career in the late 1990s, never won a Cup Series title but did win the Daytona 500 twice. He has won 32 times in NASCAR's top series.
