The Cannabis Patch is Changing Lives When It Comes To Pain Relief.

In the arena of cannabis innovation, a small company called Cannabis Science has just moved into the limelight. The company, based in Europe, just released a product that’s the culmination of years of research. That product is a cannabis patch which slowly releases medical marijuana into the wearer’s bloodstream. The cannabis patch, Cannabis Science claims, is designed for people who suffer from nerve pain. Importantly, Cannabis Science isn’t the first company to utilize transdermal technologies to administer medical cannabis. However, they are the first company to develop unique formulas of cannabinoids for two particular types of nerve pain: fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy. Furthermore, successful initial trials show that cannabis patches are changing the game when it comes to pain relief.

The Science of Cannabis and Nerve Pain

Nerve pain is a tough problem to treat, as anyone who suffers from it can tell you. And when it comes to treating nerve pain, people either end up taking expensive prescription medications or turning to homeopathic remedies that aren’t very effective. Often, the problem with these treatments is that they have dangerous side effects or don’t target the pain directly.

The problem of pain gets even worse when we’re talking about fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy. Both conditions produce pain that’s hard to pin down. The pain seems to come out of nowhere and is sharp and tingling. This means that these conditions can significantly impact sufferers’ quality of life.

That’s where Cannabis Science’s cannabis patch comes in. Their transdermal, topical application aims to treat conditions that are notoriously difficult to get rid of. Of course, Cannabis has an ancient history when it comes to treating pain. And cannabis researchers are beginning to rediscover the plant’s potent pain-killing powers as a topical application.
Topicals Are Changing The Pain Relief Game

The two primary benefits of cannabis topicals, as opposed to other prescription pain relief medications, are their cost and safety. Whereas the leading medicines for fibromyalgia are super-expensive, cannabis products are much cheaper to produce and therefore less expensive for the patient.

In 2014, an online survey conducted by the National Pain Foundation revealed that a full 62 percent of fibromyalgia sufferers found that cannabis was “very effective” at treating their symptoms. An additional 33 percent claimed cannabis “helped a little.” Compare that to 60, 61, and 68 percent of patients who said Cymbalta, Lyrica, and Savella respectively “did not help at all.” For a study that surveyed more than 1,300 fibromyalgia patients, that’s important data. A much smaller study, conducted in 2016, indicated that cannabis trials for diabetic neuropathy were also positive.

We already know that cannabis has powerful therapeutic on pain, but using cannabis in a “pain patch” represents an innovative way of targeting the areas most affected by nerve pain. That’s why topicals, and companies like Cannabis Science, are changing the pain relief game. Topicals have an advantage over oral cannabis medications. Oral cannabis medications often come with strong effects, particularly for people trying to function in the daytime. The psychoactive effects can be too much. Patches and topicals, however, tend to lessen those effects, allowing the user to focus on relieving pain.
Cannabis Science Develops Specialized Pain Patches

Cannabis Science’s approach is innovative because the company is designing different patches to treat specific nerve pain conditions. In collaboration with leading experts in drug development, pain research centers, and government agencies, Cannabis Science has developed specialized pain patches for both fibromyalgia and diabetic neuropathy. The company is also gearing up to tackle their holy grail: cancer. Their next step, however, is to study how inhaled cannabis medications can help treat asthma and other lung diseases.

According to Cannabis Science’s corporate mission statement, the company is “committed to fostering and maintaining a bold, pioneering spirit encouraging a genuine nature of innovation from which cutting edge ideas flourish and translate into evidence-based solutions.” For patients suffering from nerve pain, that’s big news.
