It's freezing here in my town. No rain has fallen for a few days. We're in for another round Sunday. The folks up north are getting hit hard. In the Sierra the snow pack in some places is reported to be 500 inches at this time. The flooded areas may get another whammy when that stuff melts.
I was at the tailor yesterday getting a couple pairs of Levi's shortened and met a man who was in sheriff's uniform and packing. I asked what he did and he said he was in search and rescue, one of the guys who pick up the bodies from cars that have run off mountain roads or rescue hikers who have gotten in trouble. I asked where he lived in town. He said he lived in a new development that ate up about a square mile of ancient citrus groves. Then he said by chance both his neighbors were in his unit. I laughed at that and said, "You guys can't get away from each other, day or night." He worked the fire that almost got my home.
We have the privilege of having more cops and fire fighters per capita than surrounding communities. It's quiet here and a good place to raise a family and it's my guess living here allows them to get away from the muck and grime of the cities they work in.
