Feb. 24-While sitting on the patio this afternoon I heard a hawk shriek and looked up. There were four circling in a counterclockwise direction. A territorial dispute? A mating ritual? They are probably redtails. A mated pair nested in an oak tree on the property last season. Perhaps they will mate and make another brood.

The afternoon was near 80. The wind would pick up, then subside, then pick up again. Typical for a warm afternoon. The forecast isn't optimistic for any rainfall for the next few days.

I remembered to bring a freebie packet of "Sugar Star" phlox seeds to Blake at the glass shop. I showed her how I make seed cups with newspaper and clear strapping tape. So simple. And cheap.

CC the Calico Cat had an eye injury, but this morning it had healed. She is such a resilient kitty.

I'm up to 90 lettuces, and more radish, spinach, and carrot. The first two rows of Pink Beauty radishes have already germinated. The carrot seeds will come around, but I'm worried about the spinach. The seed was from an opened packet and I stored in the shed. If nothing germinates, I have another unopened packet. It's only been a few days since the first row was sown.

I had enough energy to work on the watermelon hills #1 and #2. The busted waterline can wait a few more days. I need to work on the raised beds on the patio. The bed beside the ledge needs more work so I can have a try at Fava Beans around March 1.

Starbucks loaded me down this afternoon. I had enough for a tomato box and the compost pile. Worms were present when I spaded the soil. Good to see.

The last of the homemade potting soil went into a coffee can I took home with me on the bus. It will go into the seed cups I've made. But...I forgot the scissors and the tape so I couldn't make more when I got home.

I've finally figured out what Rico was up with this project he's been working at for the past three days. Apparently the property owner is a party guy. He drove up to his personal parking spot on a black Harley Davidson. He pointed to where Rico was working and told this would be Ali's Cafe. He and his many friends will certainly have a nice view of the Charlotte skyline.

He looks at you like you owe him money.
