Matthew McConaughey's new movie Gold is a fictionalised version of the famous Bre-X mining scandal...but what really happened?
On paper, everything about Canadian minerals company Bre-X Minerals and its jungle-based mine looked good. In fact, it looked golden.
Back in the early nineties, deposits of the precious metal – one whose name still evokes a childish, pirates and buried-treasure sort of thrill – were reportedly discovered by geologists John Felderhof (the loose inspiration for McConaughey's character in Gold) and Michael de Guzman in Indonesian Borneo, in an area that had been deemed worthless by other prospectors.
