Anyone know if Duct Cleaning is a scam ?

Was thinking about doing it, but friends that have had it done said it doesn't help. Some home improvement people have told me the dust/dirt sticks to the ductwork over the years, and very little debre, if any, comes off. What does come off, the filter catches. Anyone have this done ?
