Yes, buffering is a bandwidth problem and HVEC has basically solved that. The timing issue (variable frame rates) is also solved, I think this was one that was plaguing their own codec to such an extent that they gave up on it.

What remains is the video quality, which is a processor/memory problem. I think we have yet to see improvements on the basis of offloading to the GPU, so jury still out on that one.

I do also think Steve has been too optimistic, at times, but on the other hand, this is complex stuff and they are a small outfit.

Not only is Javascript complex and resource hogging itself, they also have to anticipate numerous different user scenarios in terms of devices, processors, bandwidth, memory, usage, etc.

It has happened more than once that just as they thought there was light at the end of the tunnel, another problem manifested itself (for instance throttling by ISPs).

Like I argued many times before, I don't know whether it will ultimately be good enough for commercial use (although on a small scale, it already is), let alone success. What I do know is that:
- It is interesting enough to try
- They are fairly close. Quality doesn't need to improve by orders of magnitude to enable the company to carve out a nice little niche, most notably in ads.

But while waiting for that jury to return, in the meantime lets not forget that:
- PlayMPE has improved on revenues, on usability, and even more on cost
- They have built a video hosting platform which can generate business aside from Clipstream.

And that while there is maximum despair in the share price. The company is now valued at $8M.
