Looking out into the world today, it’s easy to see why brands are more important now than at any time in the past 100 years. Brands are psychology and science brought together as a promise mark as opposed to a trademark. Brands convey a uniform quality, credibility and experience. Brands are valuable. Many companies put the value of their brand on their balance sheet.

Branding is fundamental. Branding is basic. Branding is essential. Building brands builds incredible value for companies and corporations.

Why? Well you don’t have to look very far. When Tata Motors of India bought Jaguar and Range Rover from Ford, what did they buy? Factories? Raw Materials? Employees? No Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley helped Ford sell the brands to Tata for $2.56 billion, and the brands were worth more than all other ingredients combined.

Likewise, when Kraft bought Cadbury for $19.5 Billion what did they buy? The chocolate? The factories? The recipes? The candy makers? No they bought the brands.

Sony Computer Entertainment bought rival video gaming brand Xbox from Microsoft for $32.8 BILLION

Apple Just Bought Beats Electronics, a rising music brand, for $3 billion Which Only Has 110,000 Subscribers

The list goes on with many startup acquisitions examples such as
WhatsApp being acquired for $19 billion by Facebook, Tumblr acquired by Yahoo for over $1 billion or the Israeli navigation startup Waze that Google Maps acquired for over $950 million and Nest Labs (which had no significant revenue and only two products) acquired by Google for over $3 billion, K.K.R. Bought Internet Brands for $1.1 Billion which operates a portfolio of websites and software,
it’s no wonder that investors, rightfully so, have their curiosity piqued.

Apart from the startup founders and early employees benefiting, a large chunk of the proceeds from a company’s sale goes to investors who were keen to get in early. Startup investing, as shown in the examples above, can be an extremely rewarding asset class, offering an attractive alternative to the public market. Not only does it give investors the opportunity to get in early and experience huge returns, but it also gives a front-row seat on the thrilling roller-coaster of a startup’s growth trajectory.

In today’s world, branding is more important than ever. But you can’t simply build a brand like they did in the old days. You need a cultural movement strategy to achieve kinetic growth for your brand.

All these things can help increase the value of the start-up and show you are on the ball with your IP when someone wants to make you an offer you can’t refuse.

This aspect is really important – being IP savvy and ready for the sale and purchase process, or whatever the next phase in the start-up’s life may be.
