When doing biological research to aid in cancer treatment, the contents of cells are extremely important. For scientists to have the best chance of making progress towards a discovery, the meticulousness of cell dissection cannot be stressed enough. Many of the secrets lie in protein extraction, digestion in all tissue types, including challenging samples like tumors. Pressure BioSciences (PBIO) is a life sciences companyfocused on the development, marketing, and sale of proprietary laboratory instrumentation and associated consumables based on its Pressure Cycling Technology (“PCT”). PCT is a patented, enabling technology platform that uses alternating cycles of hydro static pressure between ambient and ultra-high levels (up to 90,000 psi) to safely, conveniently control the actions of molecules in biological samples, e.g., the rupture (lysis) of cells and tissues from human, animal, plant, and microbial sources, and the inactivation of pathogens.

As I mentioned earlier, the contents of cells are where scientists need to focus their time, but when conducting the very delicate harvesting process, many of the contents are wasted. PBIO has a technology that assists in streamlining this process with efficiency and veracity. The company has nearly 300 PCT systems installed in over 150 academic, government, biotech, and pharma laboratories worldwide, with primary applications in bio-marker discovery, forensics, agriculture, and pathology.

On January 12, 2016, SCIEX, a global leader in life science analytical technologies, announced an exclusive co-marketing agreement with PBIO. This relationship will uniquely position SCIEX to address a major challenge in complex sample preparation by marketing a complete solution to increase the depth, breadth, and re-product- ability of protein extraction, digestion in all tissue types, including challenging samples like tumors. This focus on improved sample preparation will enable scientists to extract more proteins from complex sample types, potentially yielding superior biological insights and discoveries.

Cancer research has always been at the forefront of many global initiatives as evident in the 2016 State-of-the-Union message where President Barack Obama introduced the $1 billion 'Cancer Moonshot' initiative, with a goal to accelerate research in cancer, to break down existing barriers that stymie progress, and to support other changes that will improve the ability to prevent, detect, treat, and cure cancer. The National Cancer Institute’s allocation in the 2016 Consolidated Appropriations Act is $5.21 billion, an increase of $260.5 million over fiscal year 2015.

Cancer affects everyone is some way and is part of a global effort to discover, define, and produce new medicines and treatment methods. Companies like PBIO play an integral part in this struggle, and I plan on reaching out to the CEO and asking for a recap of the company’s 2016 goals along with their plans for the future.
