I have watched and learned but never acted ... if I had I might be holding a significant number of shares at a zero cost basis.



"Zero cost basis" is a mathematical impossibility. Do the math each year. You can always average down, but the gains themselves make it impossible to get to zero. There is one major forgotten criteria that makes it a mathematical impossibility, but need a little business and financial sense first.
