I don't follow AA closely. It's been a dog for many decades and one that pays way too low a dividend yield.

But I know that splitting up some oil stocks in recent years has done wonders for them. Guess that's what The Street had hoped for with Alcoa. The poor earnings weren't expected, obviously.

My question is why were sales expectations so high of reality?
