Goldmont at 2.5GHz in GB4 gets ~1575 in single core GB4. A10 gets ~3470 at 2.34GHz (so higher perf/clock than even Skylake), Kryo gets around 1573 in single core at 2.15GHz, and A72 gets around 1703 at 2.3GHz.

Goldmont is in the ballpark of A72/Kryo, so Intel wasn't wrong in predicting that Broxton would have leadership class CPU perf in mid-2015. But, alas, it never actually arrived in mid-2015.

Really a repeat of what killed Merrifield/Moorefield in terms of CPU competitiveness -- missing the original time to market window.

Anyway, it seems to me that the Atom CPU core teams were good, but the SoC integration and physical implementation teams did not meet the mark given the time to market issues and the frequency miss (I believe leaks showed that Intel targeted 2.7GHz for Goldmont in Broxton).
