Smart Cities Initiative advanced by Better Communities Alliance

26 Sep 2016
Arup has joined the Department of Energy’s Better Communities Alliance, which strives to ignite clean energy action across the US.
As part of Smart Cities Week, the US Department of Energy (DOE) is launching the Better Communities Alliance (BCA), a groundbreaking collaborative effort among local governments, philanthropies, nonprofit organisations, and leading private companies to accelerate local clean energy progress and leadership in the United States.
"Cities and counties are already centres for clean energy innovation across the United States. Through the Better Communities Alliance, DOE is committed to further supporting America’s local governments and working with leaders from the public and private sectors to deliver energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainable transportation solutions that create cleaner and more prosperous communities for millions of Americans."
— Franklin Orr, DOE Under Secretary for Science and Energy.
Arup, as one of 60 partners and affiliates announcing their commitment today, agrees to work with the DOE on strategic collaboration that supports the goals of the BCA and builds the capacity of local governments to deliver clean energy solutions. The Alliance’s goals include reducing the wasted energy in homes and buildings, expanding renewable energy and sustainable transportation options for their residents and businesses, harnessing new energy-saving technologies, and investing in resilient power systems and community infrastructure.
"Arup is excited to be part of this strategic partnership with the US Department of Energy, along with leading cities from around the country. Arup has a long track record of working with cities around the world on urban clean energy solutions, and we look forward to putting that expertise to further use through the Better Communities Alliance."
— Brian Swett, Arup Americas Director of Cities and Sustainable Real Estate.
The Better Communities Alliance is part of the broader Better Buildings Initiative, which aims to make commercial, public, industrial, and residential buildings 20% more energy efficient over the next decade. Through Better Buildings, public and private sector organisations are working together to share and replicate successful strategies to drive energy efficiency.
