Newbie Question?

How do we really know how many shares are outstanding?

There has been no way to pay the lawyers for this compnay over the years. How do we know that they have not been paying themselves millions of shares over the years?

Sorry if this has been discussed before but it seems the most obvious question for someone new here. TIA
