Desormeaux; Stewards fine Stevens, Desormeaux for whip violations

Hall of Fame jockeys Kent Desormeaux and Gary Stevens have been fined for excessive use of the whip in races on Saturday.

Both riders were cited for using their whips more than three times in succession without giving their mounts a chance to respond.

Stevens was fined $200 for his winning ride on Coldspell, a maiden, in Saturday's seventh race. This was the second offense for Stevens in the last 60 days.

Desormeaux was fined $100 for his winning ride on Perfectly Majestic in Saturday's third race, an optional claimer at 1 1-16 miles on turf. This was Desormeaux's first offense in the last 60 days, resulting in a smaller fine.
