Electro-optic/Photonic Device Engineer
Lightwave Logic Inc.
Gmail Email Print
Lightwave Logic, a public photonics company, is seeking an experienced electro-optic/photonic device engineer to enhance the company’s activities in developing fiber-optic-coupled multi-GHz optical guided–wave modulators and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) based on innovative electro-optic polymers. This position requires hands-on efforts in optical and rf measurements and data analysis, and collaborative work in test equipment development, and in modulator-chip and package design and fabrication. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development, qualification and moderate-volume prototyping of these modulators and circuits in this rapidly growing company. Lightwave Logic’s facility is located in Longmont, CO.
These products will significantly advance the state of the modulator commercial art in low-power and low-loss operation up to at least 50 GHz, and will be key components in next-generation fiber optic telecom and datacom systems. The devices will be fabricated on silicon substrates and in some cases will be incorporated into nanoscale silicon photonic chips. The developed technology will be extendable to multi-modulator PICs.

Evaluating loss, modal properties and other passive characteristics of electro-optical polymer waveguide devices. This task includes designing and implementing advanced micro-optic-based optical test systems, data collection and analysis.
Evaluating electro-optic properties of advanced polymers. This task includes helping to design and implement optical/electrical/mechanical test equipment.

Evaluating electro-optic properties of modulators, from low frequencies to multi-GHz (50-100 GHz). Task includes designing and implementing advanced electro-optic test systems for both packaged and unpackaged modulator chips, data collection and analysis. Test systems can include fiber interferometers.

Evaluating a multiplicity of modulators and passive polymer photonics device, including the use of statistical methods to assess device environmental integrity and manufacturability.

Operating and helping to modify and maintain as required, electro-optic test equipment such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, lasers and photodiodes, micro-positioning mounts, and data collection interfaces.

Supervising and directing electro-optic technicians. Working effectively as part of an inter-disciplinary engineering team that includes device designers, micro-fabrication engineers, package and test engineers, and technicians.

B.S. or M.S. in relevant field, preferably physics, or electrical or optical engineering.

Post graduate experience in characterizing photonic devices. A plus would be development experience for manufacturing in a ramping, volume environment.

Three to five years experience working in rf/electro-optic testing and commercial device development.

Demonstrated technical innovation and experience in related disciplines such as interferometry and multi-GHz device design, testing and data analysis. Experience with optical and/or electro-optic polymer materials highly desired, but not mandatory.

Experience in or good working knowledge of photonic devices, preferably guided-wave structures. Demonstrated ability to effectively work in an engineering product-development team and with other relevant groups such as external suppliers, consultants and partners.

Skill and experience in effective and timely communications both oral and written.
