Actually, my W 1 FE unit and I were discussing how far and wide the path of civilization has been just the other day. We are simply amazed at how much science, especially medicine, has advanced. Of course, being a biology major in 1964 when genetics was largely a study of Gregor Mendel and his pea plants, I am personally amazed at how dated my bachelors degree is. We did know about the Watson/Crick model of the DNA molecule, but nobody could have imagined recombinant DNA; not in our wildest dreams.
One day my uncle Ed, whom I thought the sun rose and set over, told me that man would never go into space because there was no air out there for the propellers to push against. I guess he was shocked when Neil Armstrong made that one small step, or was it a giant leap? Of course what bothers me most is that wonderful war on poverty that Lyndon Johnson started. After five decades of that war, there are more poor people than there were then, and they breed like rabbits on our dime.
Sorry to ramble so. The passage of time has had its good and bad. Sometimes I wonder if I have lived in "the best of times," and the worst of times is yet to come.
