Or, they build a compute fabric in ASIC that is programmable in some constrained way that is relevant for efficient neural computing (ie - tensorflow). Analogous to GPU programmability for graphics workloads.

I think Google/Facebook and perhaps Nvidia are much farther along this path than Intel. Given their sluggish adoption of things outside their CPU focus.

If you look at this years ISCA proceedings (the premier computer architecture academic conference), you'll see for the first time - three whole sessions on neural processing.

It used to be all about CPU.
