Brilliant new beehive harnesses solar energy to exterminate the colony’s worst enemy

An innovative new beehive design –launched via an Indiegogo campaign– might just be the solution we need to relieve, or even end, colony collapse disorder in bees. Abandoning chemicals and harnessing the power of Mother Nature herself, the Thermosolar Hive aims to target one of the honeybee’s worst enemies – Varroa destructor mites

Varroa destructor
mites are just as devastating as they sound. Many experts claim the Varroa mite is the most significant factor in colony collapse disorder, a phenomenon which has caused honeybee populations to plummet across the globe.

The tiny parasites latch onto both bees and broods, and suck the living life out of them. Infected broods often mature with deformed or missing limbs and wings. Once the mites are attached, they’re nearly impossible to eradicate without also destroying hives, placing infected colonies into quarantine, and delaying seasonal pollination. The Varroa mites’ tendency to transfer from bee to bee and hive to hive makes containment even more complicated.

And while pesticides can often treat bees for Varroa mites, the chemicals come at a price. Not only do hives have to be shut down for keepers to administer the chemicals, but sometimes, mites can actually become resistant to the pesticides.

To circumvent these issues, the cleverly-designed Thermosolar Hive leverages the power of the sun to increase the temperature of the hive to a heat that bees can withstand but Varroa mites cannot. This heat makes it nearly impossible for mites to take up residence in the hive, and it steers them away without the help of any harsh pesticides. The hive’s creators also boast that it won’t significantly interrupt pollination and won’t run the risk of mutating mites.

The Thermosolar Hive only exists in protoype form at this point, but if its creators can raise $20,000 over the course of the next month, they’ll have enough to bring their design into production. Assuming that they hit that mark, and barring any hiccups in the manufacturing process, the creators expect to begin shipping to backers sometime around January or February of 2017.

Thermosolar Hive™ is a revolutionary beehive that eliminates Varroa destructor - the main threat to beekeeping worldwide. Ecologically, without chemicals, and in an extremely effective way. So far, beekeepers were only trying to limit Varroa numbers with chemicals used inside their hives. From now on, they can start eliminating all of the mites just with the power of Sun. It is a game changer in beekeeping. Thermosolar Hive™ produces healthy honey and supports the health of bees.

"Thermosolar Hive™ can help stop the bee crisis, more than any other invention in the last decades."

Let sunshine do the work!

Use patented Thermosolar Hive™ to

* win over Varroa destructor mites!

And it significantly improves beekeeping in many areas:

* It speeds up the spring expansion of the bee colonies
* Saves winter honey reserves and reserves throughout the season
* Increases flight activity of bees
* Increases honey collection potential
* Saves beekeper´s time

All that without chemicals.

All is achieved by efficient use of solar energy. The beekeeper benefits from having healthier bees producing more honey and the consumer benefits from the return to natural honey without widely used chemicals.

"Varroa destructor - the main threat to beekeeping worldwide." How to defeat it?

The mite called Varroa destructor is the main source of bee colonies mortality in the world. Currently, in order to fight Varroa we utilize chemicals. Unfortunately, their effectivity is not sufficient. The mite has grown resistance to some of the chemicals, significantly decreasing their effect. Higher dose of pesticide is needed to kill the mite. There are also other chemicals used against mite, but none of them is effective enough to eliminate Varroa completely. They can only help to limit its numbers.

Commercial beeswax is now contaminated with residues of synthetic miticides applied by us - beekeepers. The three most prevalent synthetic chemicals found in combs have been applied by beekeepers in order to control Varroa, more than any other agricultural pesticides.

Varroa itself is dangerous to bees. It's basically like having a big creature attached to your side, sucking your blood. Moreover, Varroa destructor is the vector of many viruses. Most deadly one is Deformed Wing Virus. Not only do bees suffer direct damage from the mites, but also from viruses - this combination is lethal. Before the occurrence of Varroa destructor, bee viruses have been considered a minor problem to honey bee health. Varroa has changed it.

Huge breeding potential of the mite enables it to kill even a strong hive during one season. Without treatment and anti-varroa measurements, most of colonies do not survive winter.

How to get out of it?

It has been known for decades that the only weakness of the Varroa destructor is its considerable sensitivity to increased temperature. It was found in Japan and the idea was developed later by experts in many other countries, especially in Germany and Russia. It was proved, that thermotherapy can kill 100% of mite population, but often on devices unapplicable in practice because of its laboriousness and complexity. None of such devices was a beehive, they were only external devices dependent on electricity. But thermotherapy itself is not complicated. If we expose the mite to the temperature of 40°C (104°F) to 47°C (116.6°F) for around 150 minutes, the mite is killed. This is valid for all the development stages of the Varroa destructor mite. And this is also our solution, combined with easy to use beehive, without the need of complicated external electric driven devices... or chemicals.
