Intel isn't just exiting premium handsets, but all handsets -- the SoFIA products are being canned as well.

I wonder what the implications of this will be on both the Rockchip and Spreadtrum deals that the company signed. These were supposed to be joint projects building off of the fundamental IP developed in support of SoFIA.

I would guess that those are dead, too.

Anyway, there is at least a sense of closure in seeing the plug pulled on these projects; it's more graceful and dignified than seeing Intel pay off ASUS to put horribly delayed and under-performing chips into some ZenFone models.

By the way, without a mobile AP, Intel will only be able to service the set of handset customers that are willing to use an Intel modem with a non-Intel AP. This counts virtually every smartphone vendor sans Apple out.
