'Just absolutely disgusting': Stolen car returned full of syringes, used condoms

SEATTLE -- Jack Helmkamp couldn't believe it when he got the call from Seattle Police last Saturday saying his stolen Jeep had been recovered.

He says the SUV disappeared midday on December 18th, at some point while he was at work.

"I was hoping maybe it got towed," Helmkamp said. "It's quite a violation."

He soon realized it was stolen, and says he didn't expect to get it back. But Saturday he gets a call saying his car has been found in Northgate, 8 miles from the corner of Broadway and Yesler where it was initially taken.

Helmkamp says when he got to the vehicle, he discovered something frightening.

"It was full of needles," he says.

He counted 31 total syringes during his extensive clean up. He says he also found unused condoms, clothing, cooking spoons, another person's banking information, and license plates.

Helmkamp believes someone was living inside his Jeep, and using drugs regularly. There was also a small vile of Naloxone, which is used to treat narcotic overdoses.

"Just absolutely disgusting," he said. "I was afraid to touch anything. It was deplorable."

Helmkamp finds the crime shocking, but Seattle Police say they deal with issues like this all the time.

"That's one of those things we see happen quite regularly at this point," SPD Detective Patrick Michaud said about stolen cars being used to commit other crimes.

SPD says they consider auto thefts a constant major issue, even after the citywide car theft total dropped more than 30 percent between 2014 and 2015. The numbers show fluctuation. Since December, car thefts around Seattle have risen more than 21 percent compared with the rest of 2015.

"We're keeping an eye on it," Detective Michaud said. They don't believe the past three months necessarily reflect a trend, but if the numbers continue that way they will reassess their strategy.

Meanwhile life remains abnormal for Helmkamp, who still has a Sharps container full of needles in his tinted trunk.

"I thought I was careful," he said. "I can't imagine doing this to another human being."
