No it's nott - usually only advanced cases and very aggressive chemo with certain agents. For example, my bro-in-law has had lung cancer for 3+ years and over 16 cycles of chemo and he gets a regular IV stick in the arm - no port, no catheter.

He's had cisplatin, etoposide, irinotecan, and now is on another agent. None required a port nor a indwelling catheter. And he still has his hair too.

Most chemo doesn't require that - at least until later when they need access for antibiotics, antifungals, etc. due to severe end-stage immunosuppression from the chemo.

If he wanted to go a certain way in chemo, an aggressive three agent-cocktail, would they put a port in because he would be getting doses that may cripple his bone marrow and make him very susceptible to infections.
