They retire them to the treasury. This is what AMZZ did a long time ago when it switched from hardwood floors to hydrogen, they forwards split and the CEO who had most the shares put them in the treasury. Also MCIG did a forward split with the shell that it assumed, I can not remember what the ticker was before it was MCIG now.
