The fact that chinese herbs have been around for centuries is not very meaningful. A good engineering example is common ordinary beach sand containing silica (also known as silicon dioxide). Sand been around for centuries and is one of the most abundant materials on earth, yet only in the last 40 years or so has it been "repackaged" as you would say, into computer chips.

Of course this is not an easy task and hundrreds of steps are required. If it was easy the Cro-Magnon man would have had cell phones and computers eons ago.
